Approx how long to detox?

by Molly
(Nanaimo BC Canada)

Approx how long will a severe alcoholic (2 packs cigarettes/day also) take to detox?

My neighbor is in the hospital for an emergency cancer operation (esophageal cancer) but he never had time to quit smoking 2 packs a day and also a bottle or more a day.

How long will it take for him to detox? He is tied down because of hallucinations and delirium.

His wife says it's because of the cancer but it must have something to do with his heavy alcohol consumption and cigarettes, wouldn't you think?

A Long Haul
by: Ned Wicker

Dear Molly,
Alcohol withdrawal is particularly nasty, even more so than other drugs. While other drugs impact the brain, alcohol gets into every pour, every vital organ and that takes time, a few days, sometimes longer. Detoxification is also tricky for alcoholics, as the withdrawal can be fatal. People do not realize that alcohol, although perfectly legal and readily available in just about any grocery store, corner gas station in addition to liquor stores and bars is the most abuse drug there is. Alcohol poisoning is common in emergency rooms around the continent, so it is good that your friend is receiving close, medical attention. It’s a dangerous time for him. It may take as long as a week or two to get the drug out of his system. It is not surprising that he is having hallucinations. That’s part of the dreadful withdrawal. I once worked in an intensive care unit where 75% of the cases had an alcohol component. They had to do the detoxification before they could treat for any other disease. Keeping him way from the cigarettes is going to be very difficult. Nicotine addiction is difficult to manage, and I have known many people who prefer to die than not smoke. Your friend is in a struggle. My prayers are with him.
