Depakote for seizures?

by Chuck

My son has gone through 8 days of detox and is in a treatment facility. His doctor during detox prescribed Depakote for seizures.

He has been sober for 19 days now.

My question is: How long should he stay on the Depakote? I have heard of Depakote being responsible for Stevens Johnson syndrome. When he left the hospital he was given a refillable prescription and is still taking it.

What is the normal requirement for treating detox related seizures?

He is being treated at Prairie Ridge Addiction Center in Mason City, Iowa.

Detoxing with Depakote
by: Ned Wicker

I am not a doctor but it is my understanding that Depakote is commonly used to help prevent seisures from epilepsy, or used to control the manic side of bipolar. It's also used for schizophrenia.

In these cases, patients should take their prescribed amounts, as instructed and no go off of the medication suddenly. This drug can cause severe liver problems, so doctors check liver function before they prescribe and regularly thereafter.

You might want to ask his doctor about how many refills he has been given, but even though he has been sober for 19 days, that doesn't necessarily mean he's out of the woods. Alcohol detox is particularly difficult.
