Help for 25 year old son?

by Wendy
(Marshalltown, Iowa)

Hello! My husband and I are looking for help in dealing with our 25 year old son who is a alcoholic, but, will not admit it.

He does not live with us but continues to need (him & his wife) funding from us or his mother in-law in order to live where he and wife reside. My husband & I are trying tough love & I'm not sure if now is the time to be practicing this... we would just want to connect with like people in our situation.

Thank you,

Wendy

Tough Love
by: Ned Wicker

Wendy,

The problem with "tough love" is that people are afraid of damaging or losing the relationship with their alcoholic loved one. Your son needs money from you and his in-laws to live where he is living.

That tells you where the money is going. He has a wife and two kids who are all going to suffer from his addiction. Given no intervention, this domestic situation is going to go south and will continue to decay until he gets help.

As his disease progresses, he will shut out his wife and kids, giving them nothing. He will gladly take every penny from you and her parents.

Give Al-Anon a call and get some help from their members, all of whom know exactly what you are going through. Talk to a local alcohol counselor, or your family doctor. The worst thing to do is nothing. Your son needs help now.
