Hi Joe, i am concerned i might be becoming an early alcoholic bc of my addiction problems. am i an alcoholic in the making?

by catherine sabatelli
(greensboro nc usa)

I am a recovering narcotic addict been clean and sober now for 11 yrs off narcotics. Methadone program for 10 yrs. Off now for 9 months. I am bipolar adhd and have had some problems with my relationship w bf and son recently since dec. It's feb now.

I began drinking wine and beer in dec. bc of it. now i drink almost every day. I get very nervous and anxious around 5pm everyday and go for a drink which consist of a bottle of wine or 4 or 5 beers just to feel better. Without it I'm very anxious, nervous, shakes a little and aggravated.

I'm not taking my bipolar med cause it caused me to gain weight up to 200 lbs from 150. But I feel a real need to drink to feel better. My bf says I have a problem and I'm scared I may be on my way to another addiction. One I've never had, alcoholism.

It runs in my family and I'm worried. I really don't feel like i have a problem. i just enjoy a drink in the evenings. It helps me sleep when usually I can't, what do you think?

My becoming alcohol dependent??
by: Joe

Thanks for the great question about alcohol dependency. I don't have a lot of info in your post but lets give it a go.

I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that you recognize you have a problem. So many will refuse to admit this and they stay stuck often for years, sometimes decades. You are also reaching out for answers. Which is another good sign. There are resources and people who are more than willing to help.

So there is the good news. Unfortunately the down side to your drinking is that alcohol is just another drug. Not much different than heroin, vicodin, percoset etc. These all fall into the category of sedative drugs. In some ways alcohol maybe the worst one.

I personally am in long-term recovery from my own drug dependency issue. People like you and me are not able to control our use. Switching to different drugs (like alcohol) won't work. Soon the loss of control takes over and the only solution is total abstinence. Admitting this is a very humbling experience. A tough pill, no pun intended, to swallow. But very freeing once done.

So what is the best option. I mentioned that there are people who are very willing to help people recover and be set free from addiction. Where are these people and what works best? What works best is 'talk therapy' and those helpful people meet all over the country. And they help for free. Please get involved with the 12 Step program. It can save your life. It's worked for millions of others. I know I would not be here writing to you right now if it weren't for the help I received in those rooms. I just celebrated 33 years. Best, Joe
