How do you get through to an alcoholic?

by Lori
(Phx, Az)

My husband of 15 yrs is an alcoholic and it seems like his drinking is getting worse! I have a 10 and 12 year old boys. They are tired of living with a drunk also.

Tonight he fell while trying to go to the bathroom and landed hard in the bathtub. I was so disgusted as my 12 year old had to help him out.

Then as he staggered to the bedroom he broke some more things because he can't even walk! He was diagonsed with type 2 diabetes and hypertension a couple years ago.

Before his diagnosis he lost alot of weight. The Dr. said it was from the diabetes, but I think as much as he drinks he may have something else going on too.

The problem is we are all sick of living with a drunk.

How can we convince him to get help before it KILLS him?? I want to leave him so bad but my kids feel sorry for him and don't want to split up the family. I HATE being near him when he's drunk and am ready to get a divorce.

We just wish there was a way for him to really listen to us and seek help. Any suggestions?

Sad
by: Anonymous

I hear you, I am in the same boat. When do you say enough, the sad thing is that I know it is going to come down to me leaving him, but if it gets that far I won't be coming back. Sux when you love them and they won't help themselves.

Treatment is Mandatory
by: Ned Wicker

Dear Lori,

You and the boys deserve better. You need a husband and they need a father. What you have now is a drunk.

First of all, pick up the phone and call Al-Anon, because the three of you need support. You have to come up with a plan.

You should also call your doctor and/or a local alcoholism treatment center and get an assessment.

You will have to force the issue, and so often it's an "us or your drinking" choice that he is going to have to make. What you have now doesn't work.

He must go into treatment.

He is going to fight this idea, as he does not believe he has a problem. He believes that it's your problem and probably your fault too.

He has to see what his problem is doing to his wife and kids. He has to own his disease. He must say yes to this, otherwise you have nothing to looking forward to but his bad behavior.
