ALCOHOLISM
Finding Hope!

Drug Addiction

Welcome our site on Alcoholism!

It’s widely available, perfectly legal and socially acceptable, but one in nine people will develop a dependence on alcohol. It’s a part of American culture, from beer tents at church socials to Margaritas at a local restaurant. We buy it at liquor stores, super markets and gas stations.

Distilleries promote the “sophistication” of enjoying their product, while beer companies may tell you to “man up” and drink their brand. It’s all a way of getting you to drink.

Mothers and fathers will sometimes tell you that allowing their children to drink at home is perfectly harmless, but studies have shown that children in their early teenage years who are allowed to drink are far more likely to develop the disease of alcoholism than those who wait until they are 21 to start.

We rationalize our drinking habits, or soft pedal the possibility that we have gone past moderation. Chances are we don’t understand the reality of alcohol.

Our Relationship With Alcohol

This web site will not promote the return of prohibition, nor do we intend to argue that taking a drink means that a person will become dependent. Rather, our aim is to share information to tell the story of alcohol and our relationship with it. It’s about human nature and how we deal with the problems of life.

The classic drunk can either be funny, as in the case of the comedian Foster Brooks; or it can be charming, as was the persona of the singer Dean Martin, whose humor was centered on having too much to drink. But drinking has a very ugly, deadly underside.

If you have a question we will try to give you a good answer, or at least point you in the right direction. We welcome your stories, your comments and your opinions. Our purpose is not to recommend specific treatment centers, or to promote one methodology over another, but to present information to help you make an informed choice.

The writers and editors of this site are interested in presenting as many sides to the story as possible. We do lean in some directions, but we are more interested in people finding a path that suits them and produces effective results.

Weekly Radio Show of Recovery

Our audio feed “Recovery Now” is a round table discussion about all forms of drug/substance/alcohol use disorder. Our orientation stems from a Judeo/Christian base, but we celebrate and embrace the advances of medical science. This informal show is updated every other Saturday, but there is a large archive of programs available to choose from.

We thank you for visiting this site. Feel free to contact us at any time.

New on the site:

A disease of the spirit!

Alcoholism is a disease of the spirit. We have “lost control”, and alcohol has taken control of our lives. Because any addiction is a spiritual disease, if you are going to be healed, your spirit must also be healed. You can try to overcome this on your own, and many people are able to do this, but some are not. There are a variety of ways to overcome an addiction to drinking. But as AA wrote, to overcome it takes a “power greater than ourselves”.

People in recovery will tell you that one drink is too many and a whole ocean-full of drinks isn’t enough.

There is no cure!

Is there a cure for alcoholism? The short answer is no, mainly because the determining factors that led to a person’s condition don’t change. But people can manage the problem and lead a healthy, long and productive life.

Addiction doesn't have to be the winner, but those suffering need the tools to access strength and support. You have to be honest with yourself and realistic about the problem. Addicts need to realize they can’t take a drink, because the consequences are serious at the very minimum, and too often deadly.

On this site you will get useful information and begin your journey back to health. We have divided the topic into bite-sized pieces, to help you sift through the volumes of written material on the subject.

We believe we are body, mind and spirit, and each of those need to be treated in order for recovery to take place.

There is hope.

Our hope is that the information about over drinking on this web site, and the links to various resources around the country, will help you in your path to healing.
