Is my boyfriend an alcoholic?

I try to keep my boyfriend's drinking under control. If left alone, he will drink everyday. I try my best to control this. I can keep him from drinking for about a month then he can't do it anymore.

He gets very talkative and ancy. Then he will start drinking and usually will not stop for 2 days. Very verbally abusive when he is drinking. Then he sleeps for a day and we start the process all over again. When he drinks, his stomach bloats.

What is this?

Is he an alcoholic?

You Need Help First
by: Ned Wicker

It sounds a bit like binge drinking to me, but it is certainly abuse. He is displaying many of the classic behaviors and you are right to be concerned.

He needs help. That?s going to be tough because he thinks he can handle it and he doesn?t think he has any kind of a problem with his drinking. He thinks this is your problem, and for the present it is.

He needs to see that he is the one with the problem before any real progress can be made. I would suggest a couple of things.

First, you need to get some help and education for yourself and Al-Anon is a great option for you. You need to understand the nature of alcoholism and alcohol abuse to be effective in helping your boyfriend.

Does his drinking impact his family? His job? You may want to have a frank discussion with his family about his drinking. They may not know. They may not care. You don?t want to be the only one fighting the battle.

Your boyfriend needs to see a doctor, to make sure there are not any additional medical issues, and the doctor may recommend treatment. If your boyfriend continues to drink and refuses treatment, there soon will be no room for you in his life.

As the disease of alcoholism progresses the only thing that will matter to him is drinking. Nothing else will take the top priority in his life..

You need to understand what you are dealing with. Call Al-Anon.
