My friend is a stage 4 alcoholic?

by Janet

My best friend is a stage 4 alcoholic and continues to drink. She has been a very heavy drinker all the while I've known her (for more than 10 years) and even though she's only in her mid-thirties, she is blacking out out when she drinks and is been hospitalized for many different medical problems.

Please help me, what can I do to help her?

Stage 4 alcoholic
by: LauraSue

An Intervention is really the only way. I have the same issue with my mother and my family. She is a stage 4 and lives in an apt above my sister's garage. Has fallen down stairs late at night, broke her jaw, dislocated her shoulder and needed stitches and instead of calling a Life Squad they put her back in bed.

I have spoken to them about enabling and get nothing but grief. I have directly confronted my mother the way they teach you in program but only received 4 letter words. By now she can not even drive so how is she getting the alcohol?

Not sure where to go next.

Been in program Al-Anon member and couseling for 30 years.

Seek Help

Dear Janet,

Your friend has been making bad choices for a very long time, and by yourself there is probably little you can do to influence her in a positive way.

She does not want to stop drinking, and if she's stage four it's probably by now the most important part of her day.

However, you, her other friends and her family together can make a difference. Rather than just asking her to stop, or yelling at her, get together with her family and friends and collectively outline a plan of attack.

She needs treatment and what little hope there is for her depends on her willingness to at least try to get sober and live a healthy lifestyle in recovery.

Just quit? No way. That isn't going to happen. Seek professional help from a doctor, treatment center or qualified person and get everyone in on the plan. There is hope, but understand you will get a lot of push-back on this.

If her family members are alcoholics they might fight you hard. I have seen this happen and it's not until the loved one dies that anyone in the family realizes something was wrong. The family has to understand the facts.
