Six month old baby and alcoholic husband?

by Lorie
(Michigan, US)

I need help. I have a six month old son and an alcoholic husband. He drinks around 3-4 beers every day and on the weekends probably more. He hides his beer so I can't keep count.

As the night goes on, he becomes more drunk and often passes out. Many times,
he starts a argument.

Is this harmful for our son and am I a bad parent for staying with my husband?
He goes to AA about 2 a week, but still drinks afterwards.

What should I do? He hates it when I tell my family about this and my family
doesn't want to deal with it anyway.

What's It Going To Be?
by: Ned Wicker

Dear Lorie,

It's one thing to deal with your husband's drinking and it's quite another to fear for the health and well being of your baby.

It's a great weight for you to carry. You need a family plan to help your husband. He's not going to help you, so be ready for all the arguments and excuses. Don't listen to them.

His drinking has consequences. Does he want to be a good husband and father, or does he want to drink? What's it going to be? If he's coming home, only to drink and pass out, he obviously has no time for you and your baby.

The Al-Anon members understand your plight and they are available and ready to help. You can also call a local alcoholism treatment center and get their recommendations.

Get the whole family in on this and as a group, you may convince him that treatment is not only necessary, but mandatory.

Lay down the law and be firm. You need a husband and father, not a mean drunk.
