What causes a teen to turn to drugs?

I think my son is beginning to use drugs and to drink a lot of alcohol.

Can you tell me what would cause my son to turn to drugs?

I'm a single mom and he is the youngest of my three children, the others are fine so I don't understand?

Many Reasons
by: Ned Wicker

There is nothing more frightening for a mom than the thought of her son using drugs and alcohol.

There are a variety of reasons why young people get started on what could become a deadly path. For starters, they're curious and just want to know what happens. They are young and they think they're invincible, so there will be no consequences.

They rationalize, "Oh, it won't happen to me." The other kids are doing it, so they try too.

Peer pressure in school is terrible sometimes. Some kids are around it all of the time. Mom and dad drink, or maybe they do drugs, so the kid learns from his/her parents.

Some times, sadly, a child will take drugs just to feel better. They want to escape life and the drugs give them a temporary pathway to "normalcy" or maybe just a place that's neutral.

Moms need to be vigilant. Watch for signs.

- Has your child lost interest in his/her activities?

- Have the grades slipped?

- Have there not been any friends around, or is he/she hanging with a different crowd?

- Have they lost weight or have their sleep habits changed?

Concerned moms can turn to Al-Anon/Al-Ateen for answers and support.

No matter what is going on in your child's life, know what's going on and be smart.

Be a parent and not their buddy. Keep your eyes open and don't assume anything.
